Creating the future of logistics - Revolutionizing warehouse management with SAP EWMSAPEWM
Overview
SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) integrates ERP systems, material handling, and logistics to streamline the entire warehouse operation, thereby shortening lead times, standardizing work, and eliminating dependency on individual skills, thereby contributing to improved customer satisfaction.
Functions of SAP EWM
- 1. Optimization of the warehousing process
-
- Receiving arrival notification: Automatically import arrival information from S/4 HANA into the system.
- Receiving: Receive inventory into the warehouse and, if necessary, return inventory that does not meet the acceptance criteria.
- Putaway: Putaway according to storage shelf, item characteristics, etc. Customers can add and set their own putaway rules.
- Lot and serial number management: Management can be performed by lot and serial numbers, and it is possible to register lot master data and store and manage lot characteristic information during the warehousing process. By linking with lot and serial number management data from S/4HANA, accurate inventory management and traceability can be achieved.
- Hazardous materials management: Comply with regulations regarding the handling of hazardous materials in the warehouse and support functions such as putaway rules, storage bin instructions, and inventory list display.
- 2. Strengthening storage and warehouse operations
-
- Inventory: Supports various methods of inventory, including annual inventory, ad-hoc inventory, and continuous inventory.
- Replenishment: Specify the minimum and maximum stock levels for the bin locations to be replenished and a warehouse order is automatically generated for items below the minimum stock level. Replenishment is performed by specifying the minimum and maximum stock levels in the system, keeping the picking bins full at the time of shipment and avoiding interruptions to the outbound process due to lack of stock at the source bins.
- Slotting and relocation: The system will suggest the optimal storage shelf when goods are received. By setting the appropriate shelf type (physical criteria) and storage bin (demand criteria) search, you can optimize space and work time.
- Handling Unit (HU) management: This function manages the "packaging form" (product, case, pallet, etc.) handled in the supply chain as a management unit. It manages the packaging form that changes during the manufacturing and distribution process, and ensures traceability from material procurement to product delivery.
- 3. Optimization of the shipping process
-
- Importing goods outbound instructions: Imports shipping document information from S/4HANA. After importing, EWM can create a goods outbound work plan that takes into account transportation routes, inventory allocation, storage bins, packaging, etc.
- Inventory Allocation: Determines the optimal picking shelf based on item characteristics and allocation policies. Allocation rules can be set up, such as first-in-first-out (FIFO), last-in-first-out (LIFO), expiration date-based, split pallet minimization, and manual designation, and customer-specific rules can also be added.
- Packing: Pack the picked items and stack them on pallets as necessary. Based on item data, shipping data, and warehouse data, calculate the optimal number of packages and package type, and aim to improve delivery efficiency by minimizing shipping units. Handling unit (HU) management function supports ensuring traceability.
- 4. Automation of warehouse operations
-
- Linkage with material handling systems: It can link with material handling systems such as automated warehouses. The Material Flow System (MFS) function links with automatic transport equipment such as conveyors and lifts, and realizes efficient material flow through communication with the PLC of the automatic transport equipment.
- Integration with Robots/AGVs: Integration with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and robots improves efficiency and optimizes material flow, resulting in significant reductions in transport times, improved warehouse throughput, and increased productivity for pickers.
- Use of mobile devices, etc.: It is possible to link with comprehensive mobile solutions such as RF, mobile, and wearable devices for in-warehouse operations and management. Using these devices, various operations can be performed, such as receiving, retrieving (picking, packing, loading), inventory counting, replenishment, and repackaging.
